The Silver Bullet

An opinion in popular sports

Stanton finding his Niche

After stumbling around, well, both leagues during his 18-year career, Mike Stanton seems to have found a home… and a role. Acquired from Washington in July for a minor league pitcher, Stanton is throwing much better then recent stints and have helped the Giants climb back into the playoff scuffle. The Giants, who haven’t seemed to lock in anybody as a consistent closer may have struck gold in the 39-year-old lefty.

The darkness that we call Armando Benitez has been difficult for Giants fans this season dealing with his bruised ego and his 17 saves in 25 attempts.

The man blames somebody else when he blows it and that doesn’t have a great effect on the rest of the team.

Mike Stanton, though, is showing that he still has something to contribute… Since Aug. 24, Stanton has dropped  his ERA from 5.79 to a 2.89 and hasn’t allowed a run to score in his last eight appearances.

He has the weight on his shoulders now and doesn’t seem to be deterred. He is five-for-five since being given the closer job, after Benitez conveniently was injured.

Stanton looks like the real deal for now, and hopefully his recent success has found him a home here in the Bay Area. If he keeps it up, we may get to see his resume in October once again.
